How long do lash extensions last? Aftercare tips that really work

Why extensions fall out, when to book a refill and the simple aftercare rules that keep a set looking fresh for weeks.

A well-applied set of lash extensions stays on until the natural lash it is attached to falls out. That is the key to understanding how long extensions last: they follow your own lashes' natural growth cycle.

Why extensions fall out

Every natural lash grows, rests and then sheds to make room for a new one. We lose a few lashes every day, which is completely normal, and each one takes its extension with it. That is why a set slowly gets thinner, even when it was applied perfectly.

When to book a refill

Most clients come back for a refill every two to three weeks. At a refill the artist removes grown-out extensions and places new ones on the young lashes, so the set looks full again. If more than three or four weeks pass, it is usually better to remove what is left and apply a new full set.

Aftercare rules for clients

  • First 24 hours: keep the lashes away from water, steam, saunas and hot showers, so the adhesive can fully set.
  • No oil near the eyes: oil-based cleansers, creams and make-up removers dissolve the bond. Choose oil-free products.
  • Clean them gently: wash the lashes with a special foam or a mild oil-free cleanser and a soft brush a few times a week. Clean lashes last longer and keep the eyes healthy.
  • Brush every morning: a clean spoolie keeps them neat and separated.
  • Do not pull or rub: picking at extensions also removes the natural lash and can leave gaps.
  • No mascara on extensions, and never use an eyelash curler: both damage the set.
  • Sleep on your back or side with care, rather than face down in the pillow.

What the artist can do

Retention depends on the artist as much as on the client: correct isolation, the right length and weight for each natural lash, good preparation of the lashes and an adhesive that suits the room's humidity and temperature. These are exactly the details a good course teaches.
