Lash extensions are one of the most popular beauty services in the world, and when they are done correctly they are safe for most people. Problems almost always come from the same few causes, and a trained artist knows how to avoid each one.
Hygiene first
Tools must be disinfected between clients, single-use items used once, and the artist's hands and workspace kept clean. Lashes should also be cleaned before the procedure, because make-up and oil on the lashes affect both hygiene and retention.
The eyes stay closed
During the whole procedure the client's eyes are closed and the lower lashes are covered with pads. The adhesive should never touch the skin or the eye. If a client feels stinging, the artist stops, checks the pads and lets the eyes rest.
Allergies and sensitivity
Some people are sensitive to ingredients in lash adhesive. Ask every new client about allergies and earlier reactions. For clients with a history of sensitivity, many artists offer a small patch test a day or two before the full set. If a client has an eye infection or irritation, the procedure should be postponed.
The right weight for natural lashes
Extensions that are too long or too heavy for a natural lash strain it and can make it fall out early. A professional chooses the length and thickness for each client's own lashes, so the set looks good and the natural lashes stay healthy.
Honest advice after the procedure
Clients should know how to care for their lashes at home, when to come back for a refill and never to pull extensions off themselves: removal is done with a remover by the artist.
When to see a doctor
If redness, swelling or pain does not settle soon after the procedure, the client should have the extensions removed and see a doctor.
Safety is part of every one of our courses, from the first lesson.
